About

“[An] impressive section—presumably improvised but delivered with a great regard for form by violinist Phoebe Tsang ... This was the highlight of the gig.”
—Andy Boeckstaens, London Jazz News

Praised for her “total commitment to bringing [the] music fully to life” (Alan Pulker, The Wholenote), British-Canadian violinist Phoebe Tsang is a wordsmith, yogi and cartomancer. Formerly a member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, she lives in Toronto, where she manifests improvised music and multidisciplinary performance. The focus of her work is creativity, and the ritualization of creativity through performance. In Fall 2015 she brings her solo show Paganini's Shadow to Canada's West Coast.

The author of a poetry collection Contents of a Mermaid’s Purse (Tightrope Books), she’s currently at work on a book of short fiction with assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts. Her poetry has been commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Continuum Contemporary Music, and Talisker Players. In 2012, her chamber opera Northern Lights, Eastern Fire (with composer Erik Ross) was premiered by the Canadian Sinfonietta. A “true Renaissance woman” (Sinfonia Toronto), Phoebe holds a degree in Architecture and has served as Stage Director for the Theatre of Early Music.
